چکیده

Within the recent literature studying participation in international markets using micro data, a small number have suggested that firms benefit from their exposure to international markets. One channel considered for this role has been investments in R&D. A common finding in this literature is that firms involved in international trade are also more likely to also undertake R&D. In this paper we expand the question to consider whether exporters also differ from nonexporters in the knowledge inputs used for R&D. Using data for UK firms we find that while in general this is so, non-exporters also involve themselves in international knowledge transfer. JEL classification: F14, O32, O33

It is well known that the performance of foreign firms compared to domestic companies is superior with respect to employment, wages, and productivity. In this paper we detail the export behaviour of foreign affiliates in the United Kingdom relative to indigenous firms. Our findings show that foreign firms are more likely to export, and when they do so they are more export intensive and overall ...

Globalisation , Productivity and Technology Research Paper 2002 / 25 Productivity Levels and Dynamics : UK Service Sector Firms 1988 - 1998

This paper attempts to explain the level and dynamics of firm level productivity through a model of convergence, for UK service sector firms over the period 1988 to 1998. Firms of different characteristics have different productivity levels and rates of catch-up. We find strong evidence to relate differences in the rate of convergence to the ownership status of the firm and weak evidence that i...

Globalisation , Productivity and Technology Research Paper 2007 / 04 The returns to exporting : Evidence from UK firms

The question of learning versus self-selection has dominated the micro-econometric literature on firm export decisions, without leading to any firm conclusions. In part this reflects the limited information content of the data typically used. In this paper we use survey data on UK firms to offer some new insights into this debate. Consistent with the literature we find that the impacts of expor...

Globalisation , Productivity and Technology Research Paper 2006 / 11 Overseas Trading Costs and Firm Export Performance

The recent micro economic literature concerning exports has highlighted the importance of firms characteristics and trade costs for export decisions. Although the presence of trade costs (i.e. sunk and variable costs) are essential to describe the different export choices firms with different level of productivity make, little is known about them. The previous literature has concentrated mainly...

Globalisation , Productivity and Technology Research Paper 2003 / 45 Exporting , Productivity and Agglomeration : A Difference in Difference Analysis of Matched Firms

In this paper we consider three questions. Why do only some firms enter export markets? What are the benefits to the firm from export market entry? Why do some of these firms exit the market at a future date? Using data on UK manufacturing firms from 1988 to 2002 we find evidence that information spillovers between firms can raise the probability of entry and for a matched sample of firms there...
